Frequently asked questions about NativeCast concrete wares

Frequently asked questions

What are your products made of, and where are they manufactured?

Our products are made of a proprietary blend of cement, natural materials that are native to the mid Atlantic, and recycled materials. Because our material is cement-based you get all the benefits of this durable material without the excessive weight.

NativeCast products are handmade in the USA. We try to make as little impact on the earth as possible, and make every effort to use sustainable, local resources.

How are your products made?

Our products are hand crafted by artisans in our studio. Each piece is made using a regulated form so all products within a collection maintain the same thickness, dimensions and color, with slight natural variations to the pieces finish.

Can I use the products outdoors? And if so how will it weather?

Our products are designed for outdoor use, but look great inside as well. The concrete material withstands weather and is frost proof when used properly (no standing water). It resists heat, rain, and snow while still being light and fireproof. Decay and corrosion also cannot harm it. The cement material resists fading, and does not readily conduct heat (similar to a concrete product). Our products are also unaffected by salt water.

How do plants like growing in your custom concrete mix?

The natural compounds in our concrete mix allow plants to breathe and regulate their own moisture. Our planters help keep your plants safe and happy.

Are the products durable?

Yes, very much so. With proper care, our planters will probably out-live the life of your plants, and can be used and enjoyed for decades. Because of the nature of the casting mix, you'll find the color of the concrete darkens slightly when wet, but returns to it’s natural color once dry.

Do your planters have pre-made drain holes?

Yes, all our planters have a pre-made drainage hole (which can be plugged for indoor usage).

What types of plants can grow in these containers?

Our planters can accomodate deep and shallow rooted plants, depending on the size and shape of the product you choose. Since our planters work for all types of weather, you can plant perennial flowers in the east coast and cactus in the west.

Do you also make custom pieces?

Yes, we can have custom pieces made. Each custom order would require the cost of creating a master form as well as the individual pieces. Quotes available upon request.

Where are your products shipped from, and what shipping method is used?

We produce and ship our product out of Wilmington, Delaware. Most products are shipped via UPS (United Parcel Service) ground.

What is the lead-time for receiving my order?

We keep a wide variety of stock items available for immediate shipment. Should a product be back-ordered, generally it may take 2 weeks for final delivery.

What is meant by "breathability" and why is that important?

Plants need oxygen in their soil in order to thrive. NativeCast  Eco-Concrete is a porous natural material that allows the soil to refresh its oxygen supply. This feature is called breathability.

What is the best soil to use in the planters?

Quality brands of all-purpose potting soil provide retention, drainage, and nutrition, which is what your plants need to thrive in planters. For indoor installations, we recommend a high quality, organic indoor potting soil. For outdoor installations, choose a high quality organic outdoor potting soil. Using filtered water helps maintain the natural PH balance of all soils. We recommend organic soils as they don't include artificial chemicals.

How often and how much should I water?

Watering amounts vary depending on plant types, climates, soils, container size, etc., so you may need to experiment and get creative in the beginning until you find your rhythm.
